From "Domain Agents" to Agent Skills: Why Modular AI is Winning the Enterprise in 2026

In 2025 I argued for modular, plug-and-play expert agents instead of one monolithic model. Agent skills show the industry has caught up, and why it matters for industrial maintenance.

In February 2025, I published research on a Domain SME-Driven AI/ML Implementation Framework. At the time, the world was obsessed with “monolithic” LLMs. My team and I argued for something different: a modular, plug-and-play ecosystem of specialized agents.

Fast forward to today’s rise of Claude’s .md skills and the Open Agent Skills standard, and the industry has officially caught up to that vision.

Why This Matters for Industry 4.0

In industrial maintenance, where I’ve spent the last 20 years, accuracy isn’t optional. We can’t rely on generalist models that might hallucinate a safety protocol.

By moving away from “one massive prompt” and toward modular expertise, we achieve:

  1. Zero-Latency Orchestration: Only the relevant “skill” is active.
  2. Deterministic Reliability: AI follows the exact procedural knowledge of an SME.
  3. Scalable Innovation: New maintenance intelligence can be “hot-swapped” into the system as soon as it’s ready.

The “Agent Revolution” isn’t about the models getting bigger. It’s about the architecture getting smarter.
